FAMILY HISTORY
According to the 1841 Census Records John Ings (1779- ) was listed as an Ings but by 1851 his widow was listed as Sarah Ings Daysh under her son Charles census entry. John & Sarah's adult married children were also listed as Ings and their children were also listed as Ings. By 1851 Sarah was a widow and was listed under her son Charles census listing but it appears she and her adult children had added the name Daysh after the Ings as the census entries below clearly show. Tim Daish has listed on the Genealogy.com message board that John and Sarah's children's surnames were listed in the parish records as Ings (alias Daysh). The Ings Daysh family came from 'Jane Austen' country and it is interesting to find mention of a Mr Daysh in one the surviving Jane Austen's letters: "Charles leaves us tonight, the Tamar is in the Downs and Mr Daysh advises him to join her (the Tamar) there". At this time Jane's brother was known as Lieutenant Charles John Austen and the Mr Daysh mentioned was probably George Daysh of the Naval Office. John Ings's Daysh family married in to the Knight family when George and Harriet (nee Small) Ings Daysh daughter Elizabeth Mary Ings Daysh married John Knight on the 6th November 1859 in Alverstoke. It is, therefore, also very interesting that in the life of Jane Austen we learn that her family had gained certain advantages in their position becasue they were relatives of Mr Knight, to whom the whole parish belonged. I have listed children who were born to a John and Sarah Ings as recorded in FamilySearch but this may not be the correct John & Sarah so please take the time to confirm this information before presuming it is correct.
(d) John Ings Daysh (1805-1902) married Elizabeth Clark in 1832 in the St Nicholas Church in Wickham, Hampshire. John & Elizabeth sailed from Gravesend, England on the 'Gertrude' on the 19th June 1841 arriving in Port Nicholson (Wellington) New Zeland on 30th Oct 1841. John Ings Daysh (aged 33) and his wife Elizabeth nee Clark (aged 28) were listed as passengers. Children; George (aged 9), Elizabeth (aged 7) John (aged 3mths), Susan (aged 6), Richmond (aged4) and Mary Ann (aged 2) where also listed as passengers.
(d) William Ings (1816- ) was said to have been born on the 27th december 1816 and christened in St Mary's Church, Portsea, Hampshire, England on the 25th July 1817. As this William Ings is said to have been christened in Portsea ,and not Wickham, he may not be a son of the above John Ings but of another branch but FamilySearch does have him listed as a son of a John & Sarah Ings.
