FAMILY HISTORY
George Greathead was born on 27th April 1813 in Hudswell, Richmond, Yorkshire. He married Dorothy Turnbull (daughter of James Robert Turnbell and Jane Gardner) on 3rd May 1835. George was an engineer and a member of the Mancester City Lodge. George and Dorothy emigrated on 6th November 1841 on the 'Martha Ridgeway'.His occupation in New Zealand was that of Blacksmith. Jane Greathead (1841-1842) was born on the 'Martha Ridgeway' and died at sea. Jane was also buried at sea. Her birth was not registered but her name was entered in information concerning the 'Martha Ridgeway' in the national Archives. Jane Isabella Greathead (1843-1935) married Henry Eddy Thomas (1937-1867). He arrived in New Zealand on 8th February 1840 on the 'Duke of Roxburgh' with his parents, brother and two sisters. Henry thomas was a farmer.
