FAMILY HISTORY

     Thomas Kempton was born in London. Mary Ann King and Thomas Kempton married in 1829 and immigrated to New Zealand on the 'Adelaide' on 18th December 1839 arriving in Wellington on 7th March 1840. Thomas became Greytowns first mayor in 1879. Thomas and mary Ann's son, another Thomas, served on Greytowns Borough Council in 1879 and for a second time in 1888. Thomas (1836-1910) married in Pakuratahi on 1 Jun 1857 Elizabeth Hodder (Christened in Lyncombe-Widcombe, Bath, Somerset, UK) and they farmed at 'Elm Grove' situated on Kempton's Line, Greytown from 1860.  Thomas and Elizabeth's daughter Sarah married Henry Dunn and their house once stood where the 'Old' new Library was moved to in 1879. (This building was once the Masonic Hall). The old homestead was demolished to make way for the building to be moved onto this site.
