FAMILY HISTORY
Brothers (e) John and George Winter (sons of (d) Thomas Winter and Elizabeth Shingleton) emmigrated to Australia on the 'Anne Cropper' a vessel of 523 tons under D.B. Morton, Master, arriving at Port Phillip abt. 22nd May 1853. Their occupations were given as John- School Master and George- Porter.
(e) John Winter (1827-1899) married Sarah Neale on the 4th May 1852 in St Giles Church, Isleworth, Middlesex, England. John Winter and his wife Sarah Winter (nee Neale) sailed to New Zealand on the 'Conflict'. It departed Gravesend on 12th May 1874 and arrived 7th August 1874. One of John and Sarah's sons, James John, died in England but the remaining children; Charlotte, Susan, George, Amelia, Henry and Sarah were all listed as passengers on the 'Conflict'.
(e) James Winter (1820/21-1871)
(f) Richard Meak Winter (1848-1887) was born on the 19th May 1848 in Battersea, England. Richard was listed as a Solicitors Clerk in the 1871 Census for Kentish Town, St Pancras, England. He emigrated to the South Island of New Zealand where he became a Journalist for a News Paper. Richard lost his life in a fire on the 29th August 1887 at Wairau, New Zealand.
(f) David Thomas Winter (1847-1891) married Helena Warren Brooks. Helena was the daughter of Harry Brooks (1837-1892) and Lucy Brooks nee Warren (1836-1875). Helena was born on the 29th May 1857 in London, England and died on the 27th February 1948 in Hoquiam, WA, USA. In the 1861 Census David is listed with his parents living at the National School at Longroyd Lane, Huddersfield, Yorkshire. His father , James was the School Master and his brother James was a Pupil teacher aged 15. After Davi died his widow, Helena married David's brother, Frederick Ernest Winter on the 1st June 1895. Fred and Helena had two children, Charles and Fred.
(f) Charles George Winter (1836-1932) is listed on the 1871 Census as an Apprentice Organ Builder. Charles married Harriet Owen. In the 1881 Census for Tong, Yorkshire, Charles G Winter is a Book Keeper and harriet is a Cigar Maker. Charles's sister, Annie M Winter is visiting during this Census and her occupation is given as School Mistree from Huddersfield, Yorkshire.
(f) Georgina Winter (1855- ) was born to parents Charles and Sarah Winter in Leyton, Essex. Her two sisters, Elizabeth and Mary were also born in Leyton, Essex. Their father was a gardener at Etton Hall. In the 1871 Census, Georgina, aged 16 was a Housemaid for an elderley widow named Jane Legge. Letters written by Georgina have not been found but letters wriiten to her from her Uncle John Winter from Australia have survived. In his letters he mentions Georgina's various positions and his pride in his neice is very obvious. By the time the 1881 Census was taken Georgina had obtained an even better position with Lord & Lady (Leonora) Asburton at Northington, Hampshire, England. Georgina was a housemaid & domestic servant for the family. In 1891 at the age of 43, Georgina returned to Eton Hall ,were her father was once the gardener, as a Housemaid - Domestic servant. In 1901 goergina had left Domestic service and was keeping a Boarding House in Petersborough, Northampshire, England.
