FAMILY HISTORY
Nicolas Ellery married Dorothy Bonallack. They had a son Nicholas Ellery born 1625 and Christened 1st February 1625 at St Ervan, Cornwall, England. Nicolas Jnr's son George Ellery (abt 1655) of St Ervan, Cornwall, England married Petronel Warne on 14th February 1678. They had children: Nicoholas (1679 St Issey) Mary (1686 St Irvan) Joan (1690 St Irval) #John (1682 St Irvan) and George (1692 St Ervan). The Ellery Tree above starts with this #John (b.1682) who married Honour Sandry in 1705. Honour is the daughter of Thomas and Dorothy Sandry.
(e) # William James Ellery (1829-1920) was a blockmaker (Carpenter) on the emigrant barque the 'John' which sank off the shores of Cornwall on a voyage between Plymouth and Quebec. William was lucky to survive but 194 other passengers did not. The Captain was tried for manslaughter but he was acquitted of the charges.
(a) George Ellery (1711- ) was born in St Breock, Cornwall, England. He married Mary Unknown. George & Mary's children were born in St Breock, Egloshayle, St Issey and Little Petherick. This would indicate George moved about Cornwall.
(e) George Ellery (1845- ) married Elizabeth Ash. Elizabeth had a son named John Ash who was born about 1865 which would indicate she was either married or that John was her 'natural born child' and Ash was her maiden name. John is listed under George Ellery & Elizabeth's 1871 census entry as George's step-son aged 6. John Ash may have taken on the Ellery surname and it could be him who appears as 'John Ellery' in the 1881 Census aged 15 working for Walter & Susan Pedlar in Bodwin, Cornwall as a 15 year old servant. George Ellery worked most of his life as a Farm Labourer (Agricultural Labourer) but appears in the 1901 Census as a General Labourer. In the 1891 & 1901 Census the address is given as both Brink-Well Cottage and Brinkywell - St Mabyn, Cornwall (this is most likely the same residence with a slight change of name).
(e) John Ellery (1846/47-1939) and his wife Thurza Glover came to New Zealand with a young family of four children. They sailed on the 'SS Avalanche' on the 4th September 1875 and arrived in New Zealand on the 4th of december 1875. Mary was aged 5 years, Charles (Ben) was 3 years old, Annie was aged 2 years and Fanny was 8 months old. They had nine more children after arriving in New Zealand. Thurza Ellery nee Glover's name can be found spelt as Thirza, Thursa or Thurza throughout the years and on various forms.
(e) Thomas Ellery (1847-1913) married Agnes Hamley. Thomas and Agnes left England on the 17th July 1879 on the 'Zealandia' and arrived on New Zealand's shores on the 17th October 1879. They traveled with five children seven years and under. Mary A aged seven, Ida B aged six, Agnes aged four, Alfred aged two and Arthur, the youngest was aged seven months. Also travelling to New Zealand on the 'Zealandia' was Thomas's brother inlaw (brother to Thurza Glover married to John Ellery) George Glover and his wife Mary J and two children Grace and Charles. On the passenger list Thomas Ellery's aged was said to be aged 32 from Cornwall and his occupation was that of Farm Labourer. Agnes was also aged 32. Thomas Ellery died on the 28th december 1913 and Agnes Ann Ellery (wife) died on the 4th April 1910.
(d) Joseph Ellery (1835- ) married Prudence Growden Pascoe. Prudence was born to parents Samson (Sampson) Pascoe and Jennifer 'Jane' Tom. She was christened on the 12th October 1834 in Egloshayle . Her grand parents were Charles Pascoe and wife Grace Lucas Wills & John Tom and wife Jennifer 'Jane' Pyrne. She had siblings Mark, Thomas, Mirrim, Joseph, and Ellen. Mirrim was known as Jane. She and her sister, Ellen Pascoe, are found in the same house as Prudence and her husband, Joseph Ellery in the 1861 Census for Egloshayle, Cornwall. Joseph and Prudence's daughter Jane Ellery can be found in the home of her grandmother Jane Pascoe (a widow) in both the 1861 and 1871 census. Also present in Jane Pascoe's home in the 1861 Census is William Udy aged 25 a boarder. Joseph Ellery was a local Preacher at Egloshayle Road, Wadebridge, Cornwall, England. Joseph emigrated to Australia. He departed from Liverpool on the 3 May 1878 on the 'Samuel Plimsol' and arrived in Sydney, NSW, Australia on the 28 July 1878.

(e) Joseph Arthur Ellery (1869- ) son of Joseph Ellery b.1835 above married Sarah Hines in 1907 in Barry, Blayney, NSW, Australia. Sarah Hines was the daughter of William Henry Hines and Francis Jane Tindall. Her grandparents were George Tindall and Sarah Player. Sarah Player's father was Thomas Player who married Elizabeth Ann Roper (1808-1889) on the 30th October 1826. Thomas Player was a Convict who arrived in Australia on the 7th September 1815 on the 'Baring'. His was convicted in the Bristol Quarter Session on the 19th January 1814 for stealing goods off William Brigham to the value of twenty eight pounds and sixpence and was sentence to seven years transportation. Son, also, (f) Joseph Arthur Ellery was born on the 31st March 1915 and died on the 17th July 1971. Daughter (f) Zena Gladys Ellery was born on the 22nd January 1908 and died on the 16th August 1974. Sarah Ellery (nee Hines) died on the 27th March 1955. Joseph (Joe) Arthur Ellery emigrated to Australia departing from Liverpool on the 3 May 1878 on the 'Samuel Plimsol' and arrived in Sydney, NSW, Australia on the 28th July 1878. He is recorded as being enrolled on the Carcoar Electoral Roll between 1882 & 1883 as a Leaseholder of Macquarie Swamp in NSW.
(e) Mark Pascoe Ellery (1860- ) was christened on the 27th May 1860 in Egloshayle, Cornwall by his parents Joseph and Prudence Ellery (see Joseph's Family History notes above). Mark married Emily Jane Strong in 1886. Emily was the daughter of Stephen Strong and Mary Jane Knowles. She was born on the 28th August 1862 in Lewes, Sussex. Mark and Emily's son, Sampson Ellery was born in 1887 in NSW, Australia. Sampson married Sarah Louise Cant in 1911 in NSW. Sarah was born in 1880 in Carcoar, NSW to parents Abraham Cant and Catherine Martineer. Abraham and Catherine had thirteen children. Abraham and Catherine married on the 23rd Febuary 1856 in the Manning River District, NSW, Australia.
(e) Samson Pascoe Ellery (1878-1881). The inquest into the death of Samson Pascoe Ellery was held in 1881. Samson died after being kicked by a horase.
(f) George Ellery (1883-1962) married Elenora Richardson in 1908 New Zealand. She was the daughter of Thomas Fraser Richardson and Unaiki Karemihana and her Grandparents were Thomas Furner Richardson and Anne Fraser. Erenora died on the 10th November 1967 in Palmerston North. Erenora had a brother Thomas Wairaka and two sisters, Polly Pikihiua and May Apia.
(f) Mary Annie Ellery (1872-1933) married 1890 in New Zealoand to John Charles Button. John was the son of David Button and Jane Stanley.
