HISTORY
Jabez Bradbury was born in 1840 (approax). Jabez married Elizabeth Hyde in Dunedin in 1865. Shortly after they married they decided to settle in Wellington. It is recorded that by 1884 Jabez and Elizabeth were living in Kilbirnie, possibly in Moxham Avenue. Jabez was a brewer by trade, however he was known to be the manager for H.D. Crawford's dairy farm at Miramar. In 1892 Jabez suffered severe injuries when he fell from a vechile and was injured again when he fell from a hay cart some time later. It is thought that Jabez may have suffered some degree of depression due to his injuries and he began to feel isolated by the local people. Sadly in 1894 Jabez's condition must have grown worse for his life ended in 1894.
Jabez and Elizabeth's son, John went to the Boer War and upon his return he worked at the Crawford Estate in Miramar. His mother, Elizabeth lived with John and his family and later moved with them when they went to live in the Mangaroa Valley. Elizabeth died in 1913. Jabez's children, William, Mary and Sarah lived in Tataitai and all eventually married there. William became a Carter. Records show that he was a resident there in 1905 and his occupation was said to be a Carter. Mary married William Walter McKenzie Kennedy and Sarah married Robert Goodin.
Crawford's farm was established by James Coutts Crawford who went to Sydney and then settled in Miramar, Wellington, NZ. James travelled back to Australia in 1839 to buy cattle which he then brought to NZ. James had children Janet (1844-1932) and James Dundas Crawford (1850-1901) by his first marriage to Sophia Dundas. James second marriage was to Jessie Cruickshank McBarnet and they had children Henry Duncan (1859-1908), Alexander Donald (1862- ) and Charles John (1867- ) His son HD Crawford later took over the management of the farm. Henry was married to Helen Pearce and they had a son named James Coutts Crawford who was born on 28th October 1890 in Miramar. AD Crawford (Alexander Donald)(a son of JC & Jessie Crawford) later sold the farm in 1910.
HELP ..... Does anyone know which family Joan Noreen Bradbury might belong to. Joan died on the 25th April 1932 aged 4 years and is buried in the Clareville Cemetery in Carterton, NZ ?
