FAMILY HISTORY (c) Lucy Oatham (1787-1840) was baptised on the 18th November 1787 in Writtle, Essex. her parents were Edward and Sarah Oatham. She had a brother named Edward who was baptised on the 9th June 1784, also in Writtle, Essex. Lucy had two known children born out of wedlock, Thomas and Samuel, between 1808 & 1810. Lucy married Isaac Day on the 1st Novemeber 1824. She died in 1840. (d) Samuel Oatham (1810-1872) was from Writtle in Essex. He married Elizabeth Patient on the 26th October 1832 in Writtle. (e) Cornelius Oatham (1845-1912). He is listed as a passenger, aged 19, on the 'Rangoon'. This was the first ship to make an arrival in Napier from London. It was a terrible journey that included a crew strike resulting in the ship having to port in Sydney. The nature of the trip is probably the reason a number of passengers did not pay their fares. Of the 101 passengers only a few paid their own way and the majority were bought out under the System of guaranteed immigration. Cornelius was later recorded, in 1870, as being one of the passengers in default of paying back his fare monies to the government .
