FAMILY HISTORY

Thomas Tasker (1822-1874) married Elizabeth Nussey. Elizabeth was the daughter of William Nussey. Witness's for the marriage were Francis Buck and Mary Winter. Thomas Tasker was the first 'Tasker' to arrive in new Zealand. Thomas and his wife Elizabeth left Liverpool on 22 March 1843 and arrived Freemantle, Western Australia on the 'Success'. Thomas joined the Police Force and took part in a Cricket match held in Western Australia. Following his short spell in the force he then returned to his previous occupation as a Butcher. Thomas and Elizabeth must have moved to Collingwood in Melbourne as Elizabeth had charges laid against her husband, Thomas Tasker (recorded in the Police Gazette 5-7 July ???? - No 230 Fiche No 34) . His discription is given as 38 years old, 5 ft ? inches high, brown hair, whiskers worn all round the chin, moustache of recent growth, fair complextion, dark eyes, walks a little lame, a butcher by trade, and an 'old hand', dressed in blue pilot coat and trousers, light drab cloth vest, and black dress hat. He took a suit with him, and is supposed to have gone to Kilmore ...."
Thomas and his children James, Sarah and Henry and a young Widow Catherine Longman and her child came to New Zealand. Elizabeth fades into the background and no more is known of her. Thomas and Catherine arrived in nelson in June 1859. Thomas set up in a Butchers Shop in Richmond, Nelson. Catherine and Thomas's relationship ended and a payment was paid by Thomas to Catherine of fifty pounds. Four weeks later Thomas marries Mary Jane Jordon (nee Primmer) on the 9th January 1865. Thomas brought land at Westport.Thomas died on the 22 nd October 1874 at the age of 52 and his widow, Mary, married Mark Hyland.
